i heard that people cant work in storms. i don’t understand why your so surprised i asked when you aren’t allowed to use a ladder without training and health and safety reports being filled out. are your answers based on actual knowledge or just common sense thinking?

The reason many of these sales companies will put you on a self employed contract is SO THAT they can pay you legally on a commission only basis, the idea is that you are your own business and will be paid only for the results you produce, in the same way that any other business would when supplying a service to another business.

This also means that they have no responsibility to you as an employee, so your working conditions are, frankly, not their problem.

I assume that you are asking this question because you have been offered (or are working in) a job in a multilevel marketing company like cobra, arcadia, or perDM(which calls itself many different names). If this is the case, they certainly won’t care about your working rights. The idea behind these businesses is that you earn very little at the sales level and much more when you reach management, but only 1 person in thousands will ever actually make it. Steer well clear of these businesses unless you are truly unemployable and need to gain some skills in sales because they certainly will teach you those, but you certainly won’t make much money – no matter how good you are?

"is it legal to not pay any basic wage?"
    Yes.
As you say yourself, it is "commission only". That’s exactly what it means.

"if your classed as self employed what power does your boss have to sack you?"
    Yes, they do.

"is it legal to walk about in high wind and rain in winter?"
Assuming that is actually a serious question, of course it is!
People do it all the time – it’s called ‘life’. You don’t genuinely believe that it’s illegal to go outside in bad weather, do you?

"i heard that people cant work in storms."
    You heard wrong.

"i asked when you aren’t allowed to use a ladder without training and health and safety reports being filled out"
That comes under the H&S ‘Working at Heights’ regulations.
There are no H&S regulations for walking along a pavement or footpath, because most people can manage to do that, without too much of a problem. Even in a storm…

    Sorry…but it’s all 100% legal. That’s life.

The legal minimum wage only applies to people with a proper job based on a set number of hours and an agreed wage/salary. What you are talking about is nor actually a proper job as such. You are a commission only sales agent and that is the basis upon which you work. No basic wage applies. The person giving you the work can dispense with your services at any time.

Of course it is legal to work in inclement weather – for goodness sake – what do you think Postmen/Postwomen do, what do you think farm workers do, Police Officers do and all the other types of out door workers do.

Door to door commission only selling is the absolute bottom of the barrel work wise and as a career is a total non starter. Almost all the population hate door to door sales people or canvassers.
