Help Me Understand Something. If I Pay The Obamacare Penalty For No Ins, I Get Gov’t Issued Insurance Or?

…I pay the penalty for not having insurance and am still left without coverage? I thought if I payed the penalty, I got a voucher or something from the gov’t for cheap insurance.
Btw, middle class, single male, in Cali.

If you have low income, you qualify for subsidies to help pay for insurance. If you refuse to buy insurance even with the subsidies, and you can clearly afford to, you pay a small tax penalty. After you pay that penalty you can either keep paying penalties each year, or buy insurance.
By the time that the first person actually has to pay a penalty, they will probably be eliminated, which was what Obama wanted in the first place. No penalties. Red-state dems and republicans demanded the penalty to prevent freeloaders from waiting until they got sick to buy insurance.

No you don’t get anything in exchange for paying the penalty. That’s why you should just pay to get the coverage instead. You may qualify for assistance or an exemption if you have low income, but since you describe yourself as “middle class” then you probably don’t.

This is really simple, you are responsible for your healthcare, you can pay now or a lot later, your choice.

If you choose to not purchase (and your employer does not offer it) you will be assesed a penalty.
The voucher is only if you purchase a plan that meets obamacare reauirements. It won’t be cash money, but a “credit” voucher.
