Pick up a copy of “the total money makeover” by Dave Ramsey.
There’s a chapter that goes over how to do a budget.

I never did a budget. – A different point of view answer:
I set a savings goal each month.
If I do not meet it – I do not buy anything the next month unless I desperately need it.
Ex: Save 20% of your pay (or higher) into a savings each paycheck.
    Kept life simple for me.
    Maybe something you should consider.
Coupons, start by getting the Sunday paper.
Note: I never saved using coupons. No name brands always saved me more.

THe first thing to do is to find out exactly how much you make.
Then, go through the necessities like food, phone, utilities, insurance, taxes, loans, tuition, etc
Then, track your spending for at least 3 months to find out exactly how much you spend on eating out, groceries, on stuff you buy at the general store.
Then, do the math and see if it adds up and make the adjustments you need.
