Is A 10,000 Lb Winch Enough For A Tj Or Should I Get A 12,000 Lb Winch?

I’ve got a ’98 Jeep Wrangler Sport (TJ) that I’ve built up for off road use with the lift, tires, ford 8.8 rear and all that jazz. Right now 4wheel drive hardware is having a sale on winches and I figure there’s no better time to add a winch. I’m looking at the Smittybilt X20 winches (I know, I know, it’s a chinese winch, not a Warn). The price difference right now is only $100 between the two, $450 for 10k or $550 for 12k. I’m leaning toward it being better to have too much winch rather than too little, not to mention having a bigger winch puts less stress on it for the same pull. Any information or suggestions to sway me one way or the other?

Well, the 10,000 # is probably twice what you would need to pull your Jeep straight up in the air, so that should do you well. The only way to pull something heavier then your Jeep is to chain the back end to a tree, so take the extra $$$ & invest in a decent chain & a hook of some sorts to anchor it to.
