Personal Tax Questions – Please Help!?

In 2011 I worked the whole year and delivered my first son in September. I stooped working full time and went into part time then. My return was over $5K, Now in 2012 I entered unemployment with my last 2011 job and all my weekly earnings were taxable when earned (my deposits were tax discounted every week). I filed taxes in 2013 and I got barely $1.5K. why was my return so low? If my son is a deduction I am entitled to and my unemployment was tax deducted every week, – I never owed the gov’t any money.
Please can anyone tell me why was it so low?
Thank you everyone for your time and sharing the knowledge.

  1. Max Hoopla says:

You don’t get earned income credit on unemployment and probably didn’t have tax withheld from it either.

  2. Bobbie says:

Your QUALIFIED EARNED income that you did have to work for to earn during the 2012 tax year was LESS than the amount of EARNED income that you did have to be reported on your 2011 FIT during the 2012 tax filing season for that tax year RIGHT.
UI benefits would NOT be QUALIFIED EARNED income at all since you did NOT have to work during the tax year to earn the amounts that you did receive at that time in your life.
