What does this mean on receipt on sales tax?

In Maine our sales tax is 5 percent, but the other day I saw on my sales receipt something that said "Meals Tax 7 percent",anyone know what that is?

Many states tax prepared food at a higher rate.

Maine is one of those states.

The sales tax on prepared food is, in fact, 7%.

  2. Quick Answers says:

It’s considered a luxury tax because you could have prepared the food at home yourself.
