Where can I find information on the history of Marks and Spencer?

I am writing an essay about how the M&S food brand has been repositioned through its advertising, but to do this I need to know about the history of the brand.
I have looked through the M&S website as well as using search engines, but the information I find is only recent news, nothing about what the company and its advertising used to be like…

There was a book published some years ago entitled (I think) ‘The Marks & Spencer Story’. It started with the barrows back in 1880 and went right up to about 1990, I think. Your library might have it or Amazon or, even better, http://www.abebooks.com

The only information I can give is that Marks and Spencer started as a market stall selling habrdashery.

Unfortunately I can’t be of much assistance to you except to suggest you write to their head office – they’re the sort of company who would be pleased to help you, I’m sure.
As an aside, I bet you’re REALLY glad that in your opening remarks you specifically stated "I have looked through the M&S website as well as using search engines…"
Do you ever get the feeling that you wasted your time saying so….! ! !
