Why Do Producers Insist On Selling Themselves Short?

I have seen numerous promotions from producers just handing out beats for free or doing a crazy sell like buy 1 get 10 free. Why?! I personally think that is insane and from a business aspect, stupid. Not to mention you are making it extremely difficult for people that want to make a living or even have a decent second income off of Music Production. I mean, with you handing out beats like that.. it decreases the value of your work. Not to mention, if and when you get a chance to produce a record for someone that is bigger than your average joe, they are going to ask you… “how much do you sell your beats for?”. You cant just jump up in price and say 50 or 1000. You have been selling your beats for pennies on the dollar! Its bad business and its inflation in my opinion. If there are any Artists reading this, what are your thoughts? Just remember that the purpose of leasing a beat or buying a demo beat is to see how the song turns out and what it would do for your sales/promotion as an Artist.

I think as you get more recognized it’s only natural to increase the price of your work. As for giving out ten weak beats, you gotta start somewhere.

(almost) Nobody is going to buy a $10 instrumental album from an amateur artist. It simply isn’t going to happen.
If Dr.Dre, the most profitable producer in hip hop (most likely), drops an LP full of beats, most people still aren’t going to pay for it because instrumental music just doesn’t sell.
The music industry is brutal, and piracy has ****** it up bad.
