Why do semiconductor companies spend a great deal of money to reduce the gate length of MOS transistors. What is the "Gate length" and why is it important?

    Essentially, the SMALLER the ‘gate length’ the smaller the transistor and thus the MORE they can get onto one ‘wafer’ … amongst other things, that makes FASTER transistors at LOWER POWER and allows them to make BIGGER memory chips (RAM) and MORE COMPLEX CPU chips ..
